RPU OFFERS TRIPLE REBATES FOR INSULATION

2/2/2010

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A new six-month program from Riverside Public Utilities (RPU) is rewarding customers who insulate their home attics and walls.

Begun in January, the program offers triple the rebates for wall and attic insulation materials – up to 45 cents for every square foot of insulation used. But hurry, RPU officials say, it’s only good until June 1.

“People should act quickly to insulate their homes,” said RPU General Manager David Wright. “This program can save residents up to $900 and significantly cut down on heating and cooling bills. I don’t know when savings like this will happen again.”

Samantha Arms, one of first people who quickly applied for the rebate at the onset of the program, found out about the special deal while searching the RPU weatherization Web site (http://www.riversideca.gov/utilities/resi-weatherize.asp) for rebates on newly purchased windows. She stumbled across the triple rebate offer. For someone who was renovating a 57-year-old home with attic insulation installed during the Eisenhower administration, it was the bargain of the year.

“It’s a good way to save money,” said Arms, who received $900 in rebates. “We did it right after Christmas when everyone is looking at new ways to cut their bills. And we wanted to be more clean and energy efficient.”

Two other applicants received $585 in rebates each.

According to a Department of Energy Web site, properly installed insulation can cut bills by as much as 10 percent.

Rebates fall back to 15 cents a square foot after the program ends. Customers have 90 days after the work is done to turn in their rebate paperwork. The deadline to turn in the application is June 1

“I would be afraid to see what the energy bills would look like in this house without the insulation,” Arms said. “You spend a little bit now, but in the long run you save.”
